Tamil Nadu is bracing for heavy rainfall as the state government declared holidays for schools and colleges in Chennai and nearby districts, following weather forecasts of severe downpours. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, warning that parts of Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur districts are likely to witness intense rainfall over the next few days.
The IMD has attributed the forecasted rains to a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify and bring torrential showers to coastal regions. In anticipation of flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas, the government has instructed local administrations to be on high alert. The authorities have mobilized disaster response teams and advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Chennai and its surrounding districts are particularly vulnerable to urban flooding due to their geographical layout and inadequate drainage systems. In response, the Chennai Corporation has activated its emergency response units to clear drains and ensure smooth water flow. Shelters have been set up in high-risk areas to accommodate those affected by possible inundation.
Public transportation, especially buses and suburban trains, has been temporarily curtailed to ensure safety due to Heavy Rainfall. The government has also directed the electricity department to monitor power lines to avoid any accidents due to waterlogging. Hospitals have been put on alert, and civic authorities are urging citizens to stay informed through official channels.
While residents welcome the rains after weeks of dry weather, they remain cautious, remembering the severe floods that devastated Chennai in 2015. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and further updates are expected as the Heavy Rainfall progresses.
