On October 12, 2024, India witnessed yet another spectacular celebration of Dussehra, a festival that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. Across the country, people gathered in large numbers, with grand festivities and cultural performances marking this significant day in the Hindu calendar. Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, celebrates Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana, as described in the Ramayana.
Celebrations with Grandeur and Pomp
Dussehra 2024 was celebrated with full pomp and show in cities and villages across India, with cultural performances, processions, and vibrant fairs. Streets and public spaces were adorned with colorful lights, flowers, and intricate decorations. Families donned traditional attire, while children excitedly played with toys, indulged in sweets, and visited local fairs. From North to South and East to West, the country was alive with festivity, bringing people together regardless of their region or language.
In many places, the evening culminated with the dramatic burning of effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakarna, and his son Meghnath, symbolizing the destruction of evil. Thousands of people gathered at these grounds to witness the spectacular fireworks that accompanied the effigies’ final moments.
Ramayana Characters Come to Life
One of the most enchanting aspects of Dussehra celebrations is the re-enactment of episodes from the Ramayana, known as Ramlila. On Dussehra ground this year, actors portraying the iconic characters of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman took to the stage. Their dramatic performances mesmerized audiences, recreating key moments from the epic such as the final battle between Rama and Ravana.
The actors, dressed in elaborate costumes, not only entertained but also conveyed the moral lessons of the Ramayana. The scenes involving Lord Rama’s devotion, his respect for dharma (righteousness), and his unwavering courage were particularly inspiring. In many places, large-scale Ramlilas took place over several days, with local artists, children, and even professionals participating in these age-old traditions.
In the IT city of India, Bengaluru, traditional culture has found its mix alongside modern technology and its highly skilled workforce. Within posh gated communities, festival like the Dussehra are celebrated with much fanfare. In Godrej Nurture, one such community in Electronic City, Dussehra celebrations were marked by an elaborate Ramlila, complete with background score and hair-raising performances, alongside a variety of folk dances, songs and Tabla. Godrej Nurture Owners Association Board says “Dussehra is not just about victory over evil, but about celebrating the goodness within our community.”
Dussehra 2024 has been particularly special, with the country recovering from global uncertainties and celebrating unity with renewed enthusiasm. The festival provided a much-needed occasion for families and communities to come together and partake in the joyous spirit of the season.
Whether in the historic grounds of Delhi’s Red Fort or the smaller towns of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Karnataka, Haryana and Chandigarh, Dussehra this year saw a massive turnout. As the effigies burned and the skies lit up with dazzling fireworks, people offered prayers for a future free from evil and challenges.
Dussehra 2024 truly marked a celebration of India’s rich heritage and its enduring faith in the victory of good over evil.
