Millions gather at the Sangam as 45-day spiritual event kicks off with enhanced security and AI-driven crowd management
The much-awaited 45-day Maha Kumbh Mela, celebrated as the world’s largest congregation of humanity, began on a grand note in Prayagraj with the auspicious ‘Shahi Snan’ on Paush Purnima. Devotees from across the country flocked to the sacred Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati converge, for a holy dip to mark the event’s commencement.
Extensive preparations have been implemented to manage the influx of devotees, with enhanced security and AI-enabled surveillance systems. Authorities have fortified key temples, Mahakumbh Nagar, and major routes leading to Prayagraj. Intensive vehicle checks and frisking are in full swing across seven major roadways connecting the city to neighbouring districts.
Held every 12 years, the Maha Kumbh Mela is a time-honoured tradition of immense spiritual significance. This year’s event is expected to host over 400 million pilgrims by its conclusion on February 26.
On Sunday, the banks of the Sangam were already brimming with lakhs of worshippers ahead of the Shahi Snan. Over 45,000 police personnel have been deployed, operating from 55 temporary police stations set up in the Mahakumbh area. Thirteen ‘akharas,’ representing various spiritual sects, are participating in the event.
The city has been transformed into a vibrant canvas of Hindu culture, featuring symbolic artwork and religious motifs, including kalash (pitcher), conch shells, and depictions of yoga’s Surya Namaskar. Major crossroads have been adorned to reflect the event’s sanctity.
Authorities have taken extensive measures to ensure a smooth experience for pilgrims. Barricades have been installed at strategic locations, and an Integrated Command and Control Centre oversees real-time activities with the help of AI-enabled surveillance cameras.
In anticipation of the Paush Purnima and Makar Sankranti festivals, the Prayagraj traffic police have implemented a detailed traffic management plan. This includes diversions and designated parking zones for vehicles entering the Kumbh region. Entry to the Sangam Mela area is via Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, while exits are routed through Triveni Marg. During peak bathing days, access to the ‘Akshayavat Darshan’ will be restricted to prioritize crowd safety.
The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 has begun not only as a celebration of faith but also as a testament to efficient planning and technological innovation. As millions gather to seek spiritual solace, the world watches this magnificent confluence of devotion and tradition unfold.
