As India celebrates its 76th Republic Day on January 26, 2025, the day holds profound significance, marking 75 years since the Indian Constitution came into effect in 1950. The nation is honouring this historic milestone with vibrant celebrations and a showcase of its cultural diversity and military might.
The ceremonial parade at New Delhi’s Kartavya Path will feature Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as the chief guest, highlighting the deepening ties between the two nations. President Droupadi Murmu, in her address to the nation on the eve of Republic Day, reflected on the progress of the young republic, describing it as a journey marked by resilience, reforms, and achievements.
The ceremonial parade promises an impressive display of 16 tableaux from various states and Union Territories and 15 from central ministries, departments, and organizations. This year’s event will showcase cutting-edge defence platforms, emphasizing the nation’s military prowess.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his hope for a transformative future, urging citizens to uphold India’s ethos of social harmony, family values, and environmental responsibility. “Let us strive with determination to achieve the goal of a developed India by 2047,” he said.
At a ceremony near the Marina beachfront in Chennai, Governor R.N. Ravi unfurled the national flag, and vibrant cultural events celebrated Tamil heritage. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin distributed awards for communal harmony and gallantry. The tableaux included advanced T-90 tanks and bulletproof Light Specialist Vehicles, while performances by students emphasized the richness of Tamil language and culture.
Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis led the celebrations in Mumbai. The national flag was hoisted at the Raj Bhavan and the CM’s residence. “Let’s celebrate the spirit of unity and democracy that strengthens our nation,” Fadnavis posted on X. The ceremonial parade was held at Shivaji Park.
Governor S. Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu conveyed greetings to the public. At Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium in Vijayawada, the Governor emphasized re-dedication to the ideals of truth and non-violence. Naidu called for collective efforts toward achieving the goals of “Viksit Bharat 2047” and the “Swarnandhra Vision 2047.”
President Murmu approved 93 Gallantry Awards for Armed Forces and CAPF personnel. This includes two Kirti Chakras, one posthumously, and 14 Shaurya Chakras, with three posthumous awards. The prestigious honours highlight the valour and sacrifice of those who serve the nation. Major Manjit Kumar of the Punjab Regiment and Naik Dilwar Khan of the Artillery Regiment were among those recognized for their bravery in counter-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also awarded police medals to 31 officers for distinguished service, acknowledging their contributions to complex investigations and maintaining law and order.
Across the country, Republic Day celebrations underscored the spirit of unity in diversity. From the vibrant cultural displays in Tamil Nadu to the solemn flag-hoisting ceremonies in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, the event brought together citizens from all walks of life to honour the ideals of the Constitution.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the nation with a heartfelt message: “Today, we celebrate 75 glorious years of being a Republic. We bow to all the great women and men who made our Constitution and ensured our journey is rooted in democracy, dignity, and unity. May this occasion strengthen our efforts towards preserving the ideals of our Constitution and working towards a stronger and prosperous India.”
At the Wagah Border, patriotic fervour reached its peak as people gathered to celebrate the day. In Bengaluru, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge unfurled the national flag, while in Uri, army personnel hoisted the tricolor amidst chilling weather, symbolizing their unwavering dedication.
In Delhi, Lt. Ahaan Kumar, a young officer, led the contingent of the iconic 61 Cavalry during the parade on Kartavya Path, following in the footsteps of his father, the Parade Commander. Mounted on his horse ‘Ranveer,’ Kumar’s presence reflected the traditions and continuity of India’s armed forces.
Google celebrated the day with a special doodle showcasing India’s cultural richness and diverse wildlife, symbolizing national pride and unity. Across social media platforms, citizens shared messages of hope and patriotism, amplifying the day’s significance.
As the nation commemorates 75 years of the Constitution, it also looks ahead to a brighter future. The platinum jubilee of the Constitution serves as a reminder of the principles of democracy, justice, and equality that form the bedrock of India’s identity.
President Murmu’s address encapsulated this spirit, urging citizens to celebrate the journey so far while working towards the aspirations of the future. “Let us take pride in our achievements and renew our commitment to the ideals enshrined in the Constitution,” she said.
