Bihar set for major developments as BJP-JD(U) alliance gears up for upcoming state elections
In a significant move, Bihar emerged as a key focus in the Union Budget 2025-26, as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced several major schemes and projects aimed at bolstering the state’s economic and infrastructural landscape. Among the notable announcements were the establishment of a dedicated Makhana Board, a National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Management, as well as new greenfield airports. Additionally, the expansion of Patna airport and financial backing for the West Kosi canal project in Mithilanchal were also declared.
Highlighting the importance of Bihar’s agricultural sector, Sitharaman introduced a new Makhana Board, a move aimed at providing comprehensive support to Makhana farmers. The board will work towards organizing farmers into Follow-On Public Offers (FPOs), offering them guidance, training, and facilitating access to various government schemes.
“This initiative will ensure that Makhana farmers receive necessary assistance, helping them benefit from government schemes designed to uplift their industry,” Sitharaman stated.
Further bolstering the agricultural and food processing sectors, she announced the establishment of a National Institute of Food Technology, Processing, and Innovation in Bihar. This institute aims to drive economic growth in eastern India by enhancing farm productivity, promoting value-added agricultural products, and creating employment and skill development opportunities for the youth.
Recognizing the need for improved connectivity, Sitharaman declared that Bihar would receive multiple greenfield airports to cater to its growing transportation demands. These developments will complement the ongoing expansion of Patna airport, ensuring improved air travel accessibility across the state.
Additionally, the Western Kosi canal project in Mithilanchal has been granted financial support, an initiative expected to positively impact a significant number of farmers by enhancing irrigation infrastructure in the region.
Delivering her eighth consecutive budget speech, Sitharaman emphasized that this year’s budget is designed to accelerate national growth while ensuring inclusive development. She highlighted that the budget seeks to stimulate private investment, strengthen household confidence, and bolster India’s expanding middle class.
“This budget is centred around the needs of the poor, youth, farmers, and women. Our focus is to drive economic momentum while securing sustainable and inclusive progress,” she said during her address.
The budget session also witnessed disruption as the Opposition protested against President Droupadi Murmu’s address on Friday, staging a temporary walkout before returning to the proceedings.
As Bihar prepares for its upcoming state elections in November, the BJP-JD(U) coalition is expected to leverage these developmental schemes to solidify its voter base. With these extensive initiatives, the central government has underscored its commitment to Bihar’s economic advancement, focusing on agriculture, infrastructure, and skill development to boost the state’s overall growth trajectory.
