India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh is set to inaugurate critical infrastructure projects worth ₹2,236 crore, aimed at bolstering security and enhancing connectivity near the strategically sensitive China border in Sikkim. These projects include the inauguration of the vital Kupup-Sherathang road, which will improve access to border areas. Additionally, Singh will virtually unveil 74 other projects spread across Sikkim, Nagaland, and West Bengal, reinforcing India’s preparedness in border regions.
Strengthening Border Infrastructure
The key project, the Kupup-Sherathang road, will improve accessibility to remote border outposts, enhancing India’s strategic mobility in Sikkim. This road is significant due to its proximity to the Doklam plateau, where India and China were locked in a 73-day standoff in 2017. Strengthening infrastructure in this region aligns with India’s broader strategy to counter China’s increasing infrastructure investments along their shared border. The project is expected to facilitate faster deployment of troops, equipment, and supplies to border areas.
Multi-State Project Unveiling
Singh’s visit will also see the virtual inauguration of 74 other infrastructure projects spread across various Northeastern and Eastern states, including West Bengal and Nagaland. These projects cover key areas like road construction, bridges, and military installations, which are essential for rapid military mobilization and supply chains in high-altitude regions. By investing in these projects, the government aims to secure border areas and improve the overall quality of life for residents living near sensitive regions.

This investment of ₹2,236 crore is a strategic move to counter China’s rapid military infrastructure expansion along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
