In a poignant moment following the conviction of Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder of a medic from R.G. Kar Medical College, his family has come forward with statements that reflect both anguish and a commitment to justice. Roy’s mother, Malati Roy, emphasized her acceptance of the court’s decision, stating that justice must prevail, even if it means her son faces the harshest punishment.
“If the court decides to hang him to death, I have no objection. His crime has been proven in the eyes of the law. I will cry alone but accept it as destiny,” said the 70-year-old woman, speaking from her modest home on Shambhunath Pandit Street. She expressed solidarity with the victim’s family, saying, “As a woman and the mother of three daughters, I understand their pain.”
Roy was convicted by the Sealdah Court on January 18, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) presenting substantial evidence against him. His mother, who refrained from attending court hearings due to her frail health, remarked, “I would have tried to visit if the charges were found to be untrue.”
Roy’s elder sister, who lives at her in-laws’ residence, echoed their mother’s sentiments, stating that justice should take its course. “If he has committed any crime, he should be punished. We have no plans to challenge the verdict,” she said. However, she expressed concern over reports suggesting that others may have been involved in the crime. “If there were others involved, I hope the investigation was thorough, and they are also brought to justice.”
The sister also reflected on Roy’s earlier years, describing him as a typical child who later struggled with alcohol. “I never heard of him misbehaving with women, but we lost regular contact over the years. I cannot comment on his associations or actions recently,” she admitted.
As the family faces public scrutiny, they have asked for privacy to grieve and process the events. “We are shattered,” said the elder sister. “Since his arrest, we have lived under a shadow of stigma. I hope this verdict provides some clarity for everyone involved.”
The tragic case has sparked widespread outrage, with many demanding swift justice for the victim. Meanwhile, the victim’s parents have expressed dissatisfaction with certain political responses to the case but remain hopeful that justice will prevail.
As the family of Sanjay Roy navigates this challenging time, their statements reflect a recognition of the gravity of the crime and the need for accountability.
