In a significant move to promote the regional language, the Telangana government has announced that Telugu will be a compulsory subject for students in Class 9 across all CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other board-affiliated schools starting from the 2025-26 academic year. The mandate will extend to Class 10 from the 2026-27 academic session.
The decision, issued by Secretary Yogita Rana on Tuesday, aligns with the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act, 2018, which aims to ensure the preservation and promotion of the language. However, the implementation had been delayed under the previous administration.
To facilitate smoother learning for students, particularly those from non-Telugu-speaking backgrounds, the government has decided to introduce the simplified Telugu textbook ‘Vennela’ instead of ‘Singidi.’ The subject will follow the 089 code under the CBSE subject list for standardization in teaching and examination processes.
The revised curriculum aims to foster a deeper appreciation for Telugu while making the learning process more inclusive and student-friendly.
